The Best Tips and Tricks to Stay Energized in the Gym

Updated: Mar 10, 2024

One of the most common reasons why people can't get themselves to the gym is the lack of energy and motivation they have to go the to the gym. Energy plays a crucial role in the gym, as the more energy you have, the more motivated you are to go to the gym. That's why it is so important to fuel your gym sessions.

There are loads of things in everyone's daily lives that take away our body's energy such as work, school, running errands, taking care of the kids and many more. By doing all of this work it makes it easy for someone to sit on the couch and not do anything for the rest of the day.

As a university student myself, I understand the struggles of not only finding the time, but the energy to go to the gym consistently.

However there are some things you can do to increase energy levels throughout the day, or least throughout your workouts.

NOTE: Exercising acts as a fantastic energy booster, so even after your workouts, as long as it's not too heavy, you will have energy. So make sure to EXERCISE FOR ENERGY!

Today I am going over the 5 best ways to increase energy levels during your workouts, these methods will allow you to build healthy habits for keeping high energy in the gym. Let's dive in!

1. Take Pre-Workout Supplements

One of the most popular ways to keep your energy in the gym is to take supplements such as pre-workout or an energy drink.

A lot of people say "Energy drinks make me sleepy.". That's because they do, after the effects of energy boosters such as pre-workout or energy drinks, not only will your body be tired after the workout, but it will also be fatigued when the caffeine wears off.

This is why you should only consume these drinks when you don't have anything major planned after the workout. I recommend exercising on energy drinks AFTER you finished all your work for the day!

Pre-workout is a supplement that stimulates your body and supplies energy for a duration of time which is usually enough to get a workout in. Although it is one of the more costly methods to maintaining energy in the gym, it is very effective.

2. Eating a Healthy Meal

One of the most original and classic ways on how to get more energy naturally, is eating a good, nutritious meal before your workout. It has been preached for decades that eating causes the body to be more energized, that's because it is true.

For me, I find that this is the best energy booster as it is a natural way to increase energy and allows me to eat a delicious meal before my workout!

Food is the energy supply to the body, it fuels it and makes it ready for the hard working day ahead. Maybe one of the reasons why you are so tired is because you haven't eaten much today. So before your workout, try to have a healthy meal.

Try to incorporate all the essential macronutrients in the meal, such as protein and carbs as it will improve energy levels. Try to eat healthy nutritious meals more often to improve energy levels overall

Your nutrition is the MOST important aspect about a healthy lifestyle.

3. Get Good Sleep

Many people ask, "How can I get energized?", "How can I boost my energy levels?", "How to gain more energy?". It is actually pretty simple, SLEEP!

Sleep is the way for your body to rest and recharge from all of the tiring activities during the day. By ensuring you are getting a good amount of sleep every night, you will feel less tired and less prone to fatigue.

Being less tired will automatically make you more motivated to go to the gym. I recommend for you to get 7-9 hours of sleep every single night to ensure your body is ready to tackle all of the hard work you do.

4. Electrolyte Restoration

Electrolytes are key to preventing fatigue in the gym. Intaking electrolytes is crucial for maintaining energy levels during workouts because they help regulate essential bodily functions such as muscle contractions and nerve impulses.

Depletion of electrolytes through sweat can lead to fatigue, muscle cramps, and decreased exercise performance.

Ensuring an adequate intake of electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium can prevent these issues, helping you stay energized and perform at your best in the gym.

Restoring electrolytes is a great option for increasing your energy levels.

Some great ways to keep your electrolyte intake up is to buy electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade or Prime.

MY SECRET: Buying electrolyte drinks can be costly, so I like to take a tablespoon of honey and add a pinch of salt, this will prevent electrolyte depletion during your exercises.

5. Workout With a Friend

I find that having someone by your side while working out keeps your energy levels high in the gym. When you have someone that will push you and someone to struggle with you while you are exercising.

The atmosphere that person will create will give you more will power to workout.

I find that my best and most energized workouts are always when I have a friend by my side.

6. Change Your Music Playlist

If you go to the gym, there's a good chance that you probably listen to music while you are doing your workouts.

There are many different varieties of songs you can listen to in the gym. I recommend listening to up-beat songs that will "wake you up".

The up-beat intensity of these songs will stimulate you to perform better in the gym. I listen to a LOT of up-beat and hardcore music, it helps me push my body while I'm exercising.

This is only a "placebo way" on how to gain more energy but it

Some genres I recommend that will "hype you up" in the gym are Phonk, Hardstyle and Rap.

7. Drink Water

A simple way on how to gain more energy is to simply stay hydrated!

Staying hydrated is super important to maintaining your energy in the gym. Hydration is one of the defining factors of your energy levels in the gym.

By making sure you have had a lot of water to drink, you will have a little bit more energy while performing exercise.
