How Lifting Belts Improve your Exercise Quality

Updated: Mar 24, 2024

As you progress in your fitness journey, you will start to get introduced to exercises that will require you to use your lower back to support the movement. A few examples of these exercises are squats and deadlifts, these are movements that require a lot of tension to be put on your lower back.

When you initially start these movements, your lower back will not get as much tension put onto it as everyone's lower back can take a certain amount of weight when starting. But once, you start to progressive overload (the technique of doing more weight/reps than last time to stimulate muscle growth), there will be more weight put on your lower back.

There are a few exercises and techniques you can do to train your lower back to be able to withstand more weight, but these techniques can only take you so far. This is where you can use a lifting belt.

A lifting belt is a belt that you wear, when performing exercises that target your lower back. The belt is worn around your lower back and will support it by stabilizing your lower back when performing exercises that put tension on it.

In this article we will talk all about the benefits of having a lifting belt when working out.

What is a Lifting Belt?

A lifting belt is a belt that you wear around your lower back in order to keep it stable when performing exercises that target it. The belt is usually put on fairly tight to make sure it doesn't get loose during the workout.

When should I Use a Lifting Belt?

You should only be using a lifting belt if you do exercises that can help if you have the belt around your lower back. Furthermore, even if you do the exercises that can be enhanced by a lifting belt, if you are not doing very much weight and your lower back is usually fine after the workout, there is NO NEED for one.

It is only when you start to work with heavier plates during exercise or when you start to feel pain in your lower back is when you should consider using a lifting belt.

If you are a beginner, I would focus on actually getting used to the exercises before going out and buying a belt. If you are more advanced and are starting to get into territory that can cause lower back pain, then I would recommend getting one as it can save you from back problems.

Benefits of a Lifting Belt

Core Stability: The lifting belt will stabilize your core and allow you to be able to use your core strength to the fullest when performing movements that require you to do so.

Lower Back Stability: This is the MAIN use for a lifting belt, it is to stabilize your lower back when you are performing movements such as squats and deadlifts as you need to stabilize this part of your body when doing these exercises.

Injury Prevention: By using a lifting belt, you allow yourself to reduce the chance of getting an injury in your lower back as it will support it when there is heavier weight being put onto it.

Back Health: Ultimately, we are exercising for better health. By using a lifting belt, you reduce your chances of getting back problems in the future than if you were to not use one when doing workouts.

Increased Strength: Since your core and your back is stable, you will be able to put more tension on the body and this will allow you to increase your strength in exercises that lifting belts can be used such as squats and deadlifts.
