Body Dysmorphia: The Dark Side of Fitness

Updated: Mar 24, 2024

The feeling of not liking your physical appearance has grown to be a huge mental issue among many today, even people who look great only see their flaws when looking in the mirror. This is because they have body dysmorphia.

BD, also known as body dysmorphia, is a mental health illness defined by excessive thoughts about your body's perceived faults in physical appearance. Individuals with BD are distressed and frequently engage in repeated behavioural or mental activities in reaction to their worries.

Today we will dig into the complexities of body dysmorphia in this essay, providing light on its symptoms and it's causes and what you can do in order to help get rid of body dysmorphia.

Symptoms

People with body dysmorphia are often individuals that focus excessively on minor or even non-existent flaws about their body, every single time they look in the mirror. Common areas of distress are skin, face, stomach, and hair. Obsessions over these flaws can put someone into severe emotional distress that can affect a person's daily life.

Many behaviours are seen with people who have body dysmorphia. These behaviours include excessive grooming, always seeking reassurance and even as extreme as undergoing cosmetic procedures in order to "look better".

Causes

The MAIN cause of body dysmorphia is the mental pressures that are put onto people who want to change the way that they look. Although it is a great idea to want to lose some weight and get in the gym, platforms such as social medias and toxic environments make it so people who want to change the way they look, set themselves to unrealistic standards.

Social media is a HUGE cause for body dysmorphia because it showcases some of the greatest physiques in the world, it depicts that anyone can look super good in no time, this is not true. It takes years to reach your larger goals in the gym. That is how much it took every single "influencer" so get such a great physique.

Steroid usage also has a part in body dysmorphia. Many people see great physiques on the internet not knowing that most of them actually have taken steroids. This urges people to ruin their health by taking anabolic steroids, just so they can look good.

Almost every single big influencer on social media is taking steroids to boost the appearance of their physique, and virtually nobody knows this. Before looking at someone's great physique on social media, question yourself and educate yourself on the probability of a person being natural, or on steroids. EDUCATE YOURSELF!

Ways To Combat Body Dysmorphia

Frankly, there is no medicine that can help you combat body dysmorphia as it is a purely mental issue. However, there are some things you can do to try and get rid of it and not see your flaws in the mirror every single time you look into it.

  1. Delete/Unfollow social media accounts that promote overly competitive and toxic gym environments as well as limit your time on these apps. The less time you spend, the less unrealistic expectations you will set yourself to.

  2. Research the realities of the gym community. Nowadays there are many lies within the gym community about the amount of time it takes to get the physique that you are looking for. In reality, it takes years of hard work and effort in order to become healthier and to have a more desired physique. I recommend checking out coach Greg Doucette on YouTube as he explores the realities of the gym community as he was an ex-bodybuilder.

  3. Learn to accept who you are and to appreciate your progress. I and almost anyone who goes to the gym regularly have gone through stages of being upset over our physiques. Even the greatest body builders and the individuals with the greatest physiques to ever exist struggle with body dysmorphia. So instead of focusing on other's progress, focus on how far you have come. When it comes to the gym, work or even life, the MOST important factor is for you to appreciate how far you have came from the start, and to strive towards being a better version of yourself.

Overall, body dysmorphia is a REAL problem in today's society. Educate yourself and others so they do not have to go through what many already have. Remember, it's not about how well your are doing in comparison to others, its about how well you are doing in comparison to who you were yesterday. Strive to be better EVERY SINGLE DAY!
